An important stronghold in Kaunas it is part of the Kaunas fortress, which was constructed in the late 19th century. During the occupation of Kaunas by the Soviet Union it was used as a prison and way station for prisoners, then during the Nazi occupation the fort was used as a place of execution for Jews. It’s easy to see why this place is full of history, even it it is a dark part of history it’s certainly worth a visit even it it’s to remind us of what we as humans are capable of doing. If you are in Kaunas region we suggest a visit, and also try to book the underground guided tour of the defensive wall because you are only allowed access to the underground galleries if you are with a guide.
