Alcoutim is a small town in the Algarve, with only 3000 inhabitants, it’s actually the town with the lowest population density in Portugal. To make up for it this town seems to have a festival every other week and this time it was to celebrate the smugglers – the smugglers festival. Historically smugglers would cross the border to bring supplies and because of this there was a strong exchange of culture and crafts between Portugal and Spain. We loved getting to know the different artisans and we enjoyed walking up to the castle and having a tea while enjoying a fantastic view. Be advised that during festivals the town seems way too small for the amount of people.
