A unique case of Jews living in the Iberian Peninsula this Jewish community decided to carry on living among Christians risking persecution and even death, from the Portuguese and Spanish inquisitions in the late 15th century. The Marranos led a clandestine existence for centuries, with prayers and traditions being practised at home under secrecy behind doors and windows.
This city is also the birthplace of Pedro Alvares Cabral the famous navigator who discovered Brasil, and you can see reminders of that across the many monuments referencing the great navigator.
The city provides astonishing views of the Serra da Estrela and of the surrounding area specially from the Castle’s tower.
